ITU was honored to participate and present the EQUALS Global Partnership at the United Nations Expert Meeting on Space for Women, which took place 4-6 October 2017 in Washington, D.C.

The two-and-a-half-day event brought together decision makers and experts from international organizations, governments and non-governmental organizations as well other high-ranking officials and representatives of the private sector and research institutions.

The meeting was jointly organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and UN Women. The event was designed to facilitate sharing ideas and expertise regarding space and women, enhancing existing partnerships and forging new ones, strengthening and delivering targeted capacity-building and technical advisory activities, and promoting efforts to encourage women and girls' involvement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

The event explored such thematic issues as "making space work for women's empowerment" and "Let's make space in the aerospace industry and STEM fields work for women's empowerment". UNOOSA also sought recommendations from the organizations present on the scope and goals of the new Space for Women project. ITU shared its experience with gender and technology, and EQUALS.

As an RF design engineer, I used to spend hours double-checking manual RLC circuit calculations—until I found the ImpedanceCalculator; its real-time phase and Q-factor results not only cut my analysis time in half but also the built-in circuit diagrams helped me explain design choices to my team way more clearly. Even my students now use it to grasp complex impedance concepts, since the formula explanations turn what used to be confusing into something actionable.

Planning to build my first home felt overwhelming until I used the Construction Loan Calculator—it broke down how my interest-only payments would grow with each draw and even helped me budget for those inevitable 10-20% cost overruns, making what felt like a huge financial leap feel manageable. I especially appreciated how it clarified the shift from the construction phase to a permanent mortgage, so I wasn’t caught off guard by future payments.

As a student struggling to connect key ideas in my research project, I wish I’d found the Concept Map Maker sooner—its ability to add linking words between concepts has turned my jumbled notes into clear, memorable visual guides that actually help me spot knowledge gaps I missed before. Whether you’re prepping for exams or organizing a thesis, tools that make complex info feel manageable really take the stress out of learning.

It’s inspiring to see global efforts like the “Space for Women” meeting push for more women in STEM and aerospace—initiatives that not only empower individuals but also strengthen innovation across industries, much like how tools like the Extra Payment Calculator help people take practical steps toward their goals. Collaborations between organizations like ITU, UNOOSA, and UN Women here are key to turning these ideas into lasting change for women and girls.

It’s helpful to see how standard deviation goes beyond averages—like distinguishing between a steady investment fund and a volatile one—and using the Standard Deviation Calculator would make it easy to plug in real data, whether you’re analyzing student test scores or manufacturing quality, to spot that key variability.
