A letter to my 15-year-old self

In honor of 2020 Day of the Girl, ITU's Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Director of the Bureau of Telecommunication Development, wrote this letter to her 15-year-old self, praising big, bold action and sharing words of encouragement and wisdom. What would you say to a 15-year-old girl today to help her build a more equal world?

To my 15-year-old self,

It’s a big world out there. Explore, question, travel, discover and find the ways and places you can make your mark and have an impact.

Don’t be afraid to stick with science. The world needs more women in science. It is a background that can place you well in any field you choose. You and your Dad planned that you would be a Doctor like him. It’s ok to choose another path where you can still help people. Your Dad will understand and be very proud of you.

Have confidence in yourself and be assertive. Public speaking will never get easy. You will likely always bite the inside of your cheek before you have to give a presentation or speech. Just remember to always be prepared and practice. And practice again.

Don’t stop running on the boardwalk, listening to Springsteen’s music, eating porkroll and cheese, saltwater taffy and Mike’s subs.

Listen to your parents. They do know what they are talking about. Appreciate your 3 brothers and what it means to be the only girl. Tell your family how much you love them.

In life, not everyone will like you. Be kind and respectful. And remember some of your closest friends today will be with you for life. Appreciate them.

Always remember where you come from, and where you want to go. Sometimes you will face a hurdle. Breathe deep, cry if you have to, think, recalculate, and take it on! Once you get over that hurdle, another one will come. That’s ok. Breathe deep again and you will get over that one too. And finally, believe in yourself.
